James Miller is in the Student Recreation Center six days a week. 鈥淚 know the employees there and have a good relationship with them,鈥 he said.

And that鈥檚 the kind of thing he likes about 麻豆原创F. The feeling of belonging doesn鈥檛 end at the SRC鈥檚 doors.

鈥淚t鈥檚 got that sense of being small without being small. It鈥檚 still got that sense of community,鈥 he said. 鈥淟ike the professor-student relationships 鈥 I鈥檝e had a really good experience with most professors. They鈥檙e really helpful.鈥

Miller, a political science major, grew up in Fairbanks, but his family moved to Kansas when he was 14. 鈥淚 chose to come back to 麻豆原创F just because I like the place,鈥 he said.

That鈥檚 in part because he enjoys the outdoors. 鈥淚t鈥檚 so beautiful, especially in the summer and fall,鈥 he said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 so much to do outside. I really love it.鈥

Some of Miller鈥檚 outdoor activities begin with those daily visits to the SRC. He signed up with the Army ROTC program, and he鈥檚 training to compete on its ranger challenge team.

鈥淭omorrow, our show-up time is 6 a.m.,鈥 he said. Sometimes it鈥檚 earlier 鈥 4 a.m. for a 10-mile trek.

Miller also joined the student government, Associated Students of 麻豆原创F, as a senator.

Miller will enter the Army as an officer after graduation, and he鈥檚 open to a career there, as his dad had. He鈥檚 also thinking about law school, which would also follow his dad鈥檚 footsteps. He suspects a degree from 麻豆原创F could help in whatever path he pursues.

鈥淪aying I have a degree from a university in Alaska, that鈥檚 going to raise people鈥檚 eyebrows,鈥 he said.
